Stage 12 – Cugnaux to Luz-Ardiden – 211 km
We’re into it now Dorthy. This ain’t Kansas – this is the Pyrenees mountains. Today it’s one Category 1 climb, and two High-Mountain climbs. It’s also the second longest stage in Tour de France 2011 (Stage 6 was 226.5 km – Stage 18, another High-Mountain stage, is 200.5 km).
Today’s stage started at 5:10 AM EST (11:10 AM CET) with a neutral zone rolling start. The riders crossed the Start line at 5:20 AM EST.
10:22 AM EST
Right now there are 5 different groups of riders ahead of the Peloton which is 3:21 behind the leading group of two: G. Thomas and J. Roy. 1:25 behind them are three riders including R. Perez Moreno – part of the break-away 6 from yesterday’s close finish. The race is fluid the first chase group has morphed with the second chase group at the bottom of the Col du Tourmalet.

Now things are becoming clear. The 2 leaders are still maintaining a break, but the first chase group now has all the favourites for the Tour de France 2011 over-all win.
3 km to go…
Vanendert and Sanchez are 1:15 ahead of nine chasers when Frank Schleck attacks. Alberto Contador has been marking F. Schleck, who had been riding with his brother Andy – until he had to change wheels due to a puncture – now Contador is letting Frank break away.
With 2 km of the hellish climb remaining, Evans, A. Schleck, Contador, Voeckler and Basso are 0:15 behind the surging F. Schleck. Basso tries to close the gap but the attempt fails, Frank Schleck holds on.
Frank Schleck takes third place as Samuel Sanchez wins the stage ahead of break-away mate, Jelle Vanendert who secures 2nd.
