3 km to go…

Vanendert and Sanchez are 1:15 ahead of nine chasers when Frank Schleck attacks. Alberto Contador has been marking F. Schleck, who had been riding with his brother Andy – until he had to change wheels due to a puncture – now Contador is letting Frank break away.

With 2 km of the hellish climb remaining, Evans, A. Schleck, Contador, Voeckler and Basso are 0:15 behind the surging F. Schleck. Basso tries to close the gap but the attempt fails, Frank Schleck holds on.

Frank Schleck takes third place as Samuel Sanchez wins the stage ahead of break-away mate, Jelle Vanendert who secures 2nd.
