The Streets of San Francisco, 1905

By | March 19, 2010

This video is awesome.  Cars, horses, streetcars, bikes and pedestrians from 1905, the year before the big earthquake.

“The first track from Airs’ Moon Safari album, accompanied by scenes from a video shot from a streetcar traveling down Market Street in San Francisco in 1905. Before the earthquake/fire of 1906 destroyed the area. Remarkable footage of the turn of the century lifestyles.”

Thanks to BikingToronto reader Mike Dmytrenko for sending me this.  Thanks Mike!

Nice to see that people carpooled a lot more back then. The camera must have been a sight to behold at that time, everyone sure notices it.

What a trip. For some reason I find it charming to see the cyclists, mostly unchanged in the past 100 years taking the streetcar rails just as I do today…

I was curious about what the tower is in the background – and it’s the Ferry Building at the end of Market Street on the waterfront.

It survived the earthquake, and you can see it on the Market Street Streetview. :)
