Count: Staying Steady

By | March 18, 2010

So far, the number of cyclists I see in the morning from approx. 7:30-8:00 am along my route is staying steady:

Date: Thurs, March 18, 2010
Time: Approx. 7:30 – 8:00 am
Route: Danforth & Woodbine to Bay & College
Weather: Clear
Temperature: 5 C
Roads: Dry

Number of Cyclists Seen: 30

I essentially expect this to stay stable until April gets here.

Why April?

1) March TTC Metropasses aren’t valid anymore. It’s been nice and warm the last couple of weeks in Toronto, and I bet a lot of people are all “I want to bike to work, but I spent $121 on a metropass, and I’m going to use it!”.  When April gets here, they can decide whether they want to deal with the TTC for another month, or break out their bike.

2) It’s April. Average temperatures are higher.  The sun is rising earlier and earlier every morning (it’s a lot easier to jump on a bike if the sun is already up and ready to welcome you to the world).  Crocuses (Crocii?) and Tulips are starting to peak through the soil.  Plus, April is when things start smelling like Spring.  When the wind blows, you smell nature waking up… not the hints of winter wind straight from the arctic circle.

I’m thinking of adding a page to this blog where I’ll have an always updating graph of my counts – that way I’ll only post about it every week or so, but those who want to track it daily can do so too.

The numbers here in my end of town are definitely on the rise – but then again I’m not counting commuters in the morning rush.
