I have a little game I like to play when I get bored of my commute, and I call it “Count the Cyclists” (yes, it’s a very creative name).

I do it to keep my mind occupied sometimes (but not at the expense of being aware of cars and such, of course) and watch the “count” grow as the weather gets warmer.

It’s a very un-scientific game.

Here are the rules:

1) I count the cyclists I see on my morning commute
2) My commuting route can change at any time, and this doesn’t matter (currently, I take sidestreets from Danforth and Woodbine to Danforth and Broadview, head over the Bloor Viaduct and then take the Sherbourne and Wellesley Bikelanes to work.
3) To be counted, a person must be riding or walking their bike.
4) the cyclists can be going in any direction – same way as me, opposite way as me… along cross-streets to my route, even parallel to my route (if I look up a sidestreet and see someone biking along a parallel street, they count)

I think that’s about all the rules.

Here are today’s numbers, and I’ll try to update similar counts on the days I play this game.

Date: Wed, March 10, 2010
Time: Approx. 7:30 – 8:00 am
Route: Danforth & Woodbine to Bay & College
Weather: Sunny
Temperature: -1 C
Roads: Dry

Number of Cyclists Seen: 28

If other east end cyclists who take the Viaduct on their morning commute are at all like me, they are loving that the sun is now rising earlier and basking the bridge in sunlight.

The above photo and the first 3 photos below are from yesterday when the sun was happily peaking through the clouds. The last two photos below are from this morning, when it was even sunnier! I usually cross the viaduct around 7:30 am.

Nothing like getting your morning off to a great start than a bike ride in sunshine.

What are the signs of spring that you like to see on your commute at this time of year?
