PST exemption for new gear (2 posts)

  • Avatar Image Paul T said 5 months, 3 weeks ago:

I'm shopping around for a new bike before the PST exemption goes away in July (Yay HST).
I've run into several occasions, where a bike I'm interested in is just over the $1k maximum for the exemption. (ie. $1050)

I'm curious if anybody knows if this statement is true:
"It doesn't matter if we discount the bike for you, because we'll still have to charge you PST because we have to pay PST".

Now, I used to run my own business, and I'm sure they don't have to pay ANY PST up front. And if the exemption exists, why would they have to pay it after? Was this guy just lying to me to make me stop haggling?

Now, I don't exactly know the true answer on this, but one of the bicycles I was looking at recently was marked down from $1,200 to $900. When I asked an employee if this meant the bicycle qualified for PST exemption I was given a yes.
