  1. Last week the Star did up a series of 11 cyclists... involving a little bit of stereotyping of different types of cyclists in our city.

Where do you fit in these broad and not terribly representative categories?

Personally, I'm a little bit of a combination of the Commuter (in outlook), the Winter Beater (in ambition) and the Trainee (in wardrobe).

  2. I guess I'm a mix between the shopper girl (both in appearance & maximum use of my bike!) and the commuter (esp for the call "is your signal broken?")... with a little of the behavior of the earth mother, smacking on car windows & such ;)

  3. I'm pretty close to the winter beater, but then again appearances are a lot more homogeneous in the winter! None of the summer breeds fit me. If I had to describe myself:

    Commuter (Female)

    Call: Bwah! (avoiding potholes)
Plumage: Whatever. Work clothes on weekdays, shorts and t-shirts on weekends, the occasional skirt when going out or dancewear when going to dance classes.
Behaviour: Mostly follows the rules of the road but will ride the wrong way on one-way streets if necessary to avoid busier streets and regularly makes rolling stops in quiet neighbourhoods. Hates riding alongside parked cars, and cars parked in bikelanes.

  4. Cool Annie... I like how you made your own profile.

    I'll do one too:

    Average Joe Commuter

Call: Thank you (I try to be courteous to drivers who are nice)
Plumage: Cargo shorts and t-shirts in the summer, full khakis and light jackets in spring and fall, layers upon layers in the winter.
Behaviour: akin to the Commuter (Female) - One way streets are fair game, but yields to cars there. Rolling stops at stop signs on quiet residential streets. *Always* stops at red lights. I don't consider that a "when it's convenient" rule that some cyclists do.

  5. I'd say I fit in to the Average Joe profile as well though for whatever reason I can't seem to keep the grease off my pants even if I bind them so khakis are out. Jeans that don't show grease are more the thing for me.

My behaviour is similar but I might add that there are some traffic-activated red lights (Mortimer and Logan comes to mind) that do not activate when a bike is present. I give it sufficient time that I am sure it isn't activating and then carefully cross when the way is clear. Other than that, I'm completely compliant at red lights.

I'm kind of particular when it comes to one way streets as well. There's nothing that bugs me more than salmon going the wrong way coming straight at me. So unless there's no alternative, I'll follow those rules as well.
