  1. Hey everyone... I've come up with a cool idea using the new Lists feature on Twitter... basically I'm planning on using the either the @bikingtoronto or @BikeTOforum account to make lists of cyclists who live in different areas.

What's the benefit of this? People can find other cyclists in their neighbourhood easier. :)

Because there is a limit of 20 lists per account (for now), I need to establish a max of 20 neighbourhoods to allow people to join the lists.

I would LOVE to get as much feedback as I can about what neighbourhoods should be included... bearing in mind we have a 20 neighbourhood limit to cover the whole city.

Here are the ones I have so far (not a final list) - with more attention downtown (for now) as that's where cycling is more prevalent...

    Downtown
    Danforth
    Beaches
    Leslieville
    Bloor
    Kensington
    Queen West
    High Park
    Annex
    Junction
    North York
    Scarborough
    Etobicoke
    East York

  2. Love the idea!

Parkdale would probably be a good one to add, Riverdale is probably covered by Danforth. How about Little Italy?

Apropos of nothing, I like wikipedia's 'neighbourhood navigation' they use at the bottom of each of the Toronto neighbourhood pages...

  3. Great additions Todd... I'm thinking of making a GoogleMap to accompany this initiative... showing how the city is broken up... I'd do it based on Wards... but there are too many of them... hmmmm.

Maybe ward-based for downtown, and then split the old boroughs into regions.

  4. Isn't Bloor a little too nonspecific? I'm in the Christie Pits area, but that's probably too specific. Bloor West, maybe, meaning Christie to Landsdowne??? Dunno.

  5. Definitely not useful in narrowing down to 20 neighbourhoods but I thought the Star's Neighbourhood Map was pretty cool. Who knew there were so many place names?

  6. Here's a Ward map... click in to get ward names and councillors...

It may be more practical to use this as a base... perhaps use the info from this project to pressure councillors when election time comes next year. haha.

  7. As you can tell... I *just* had this idea... so things are very fluid so far. :)

Neighbourhood-based or ward-based? The ward option may allow us to partner with the Bike Union in their ward-based work...

  8. That is probably a good way to go. We could cover a lot of area with 20 wards, use both twitter accounts and you'd only be 4 short of covering them all. And like you said, useful from a political standpoint as well as opposed to saying "downtown" which could mean different things to different folks.

  9. Could you group the Wards to get down closer to 20? Looking at the way they are broken down on that map, Wards 1 and 2 snuggle up nicely together, same with 5 and 6 and so on.

Duncan's City Ride - That's my blog about cycling in the city of Toronto, natch!
  10. Yeah, I was thinking of something like 1+2 being North Etobicoke, 3+4 being Central Etobicoke, and 5+6 being South Etobicoke. It helps that their Ward names are the same in those pairings too.

Actually, there are only 22 ward names - each name straddles 2 wards... so if we do it that way, we'd only be missing 2 "ward regions"...
