  1. Cyclists are safer staying off sidewalks, says study (Oct. 16, 2009)

    snippet:

Edmonton - The city isn't keen on allowing bicycles on sidewalks.

A council report says there's nothing to suggest it would be any safer for riders than riding on the road.

"(The) transportation department does not support the perception that riding in traffic is 'dangerous' and that sidewalk riding is 'safe,' " says the report, released yesterday.

Research suggests that collisions on sidewalks account for about 30% of bicycle-related collisions, it says.

"Cycling in traffic and obeying the rules of the road actually minimizes the likelihood of being involved in a collision with a motor vehicle."

(Ahem! That's a "two-way street", oh, writer of report.)
