  1. (see article posted in BikingToronto http://bit.ly/2Wo4np --->Ryerson Article)

I've always been in favour of a union. Wages are the number one issue - but right behind is health and safety.

  2. Thanks for posting this in the forum Michael.

Messengers do seem to earn very little for a lot of hard cycling.

  3. Your welcome. Thanks for the Twitter Tweet; great piece in the Ryerson paper.

No exaggeration about the hours required. I was on the air (and on the road) by 8 AM; my last run was back to the office at 6 PM to drop over-nights; then a slow, exhausted 1/2 hour ride home. Once or twice in 3 years I broke the $100.00/day mark - usually it was $75.00/day. (That's 6 bucks and hour.)

Most couriers lie to themselves about how great the job is; lie to everyone how MUCH they make; and lie to the government about how little they make.

Basically you get to be in the best shape of your life, experience adrenaline rushes everyday that must rival heroin addiction and you get to hob-nob with all the beautiful people who work in the towers or run their own businesses.

Apart from the poverty and the broken bones - it's great!

  4. A union would look at making the job safer and follow traffic rules - no more recklessness.
    I'd support them in this.

  5. Re: Angus:

Unfortunately 'traffic rules' were generally made for motor vehicles. Check out the anatomy of a ride I did on my bike this week; to see the perspective of one particular cyclist.

We need 'freeways' for bikes. Starting and stopping is SO inefficient that with out freeways, or lights timed for bicycles, biking will never become the option it needs to be for the health of every one AND the planet.

Don't expect a union to police traffic rules - although education and proactive political action certainly could (and should) be a role for a Messengers Union.

    Michael Holloway

  6. I agree with getting freeways for bikes, but until that happens we should follow traffic lights. A responsible union will demand workplace safety for their members.

  7. I agree but some stop lights are on timers designed to regulate motor traffic, should a cyclist sit and wait at a desolate corner for the light to change - or read the situation and proceed with caution?

    mh

  8. I stop at red lights and feel like a sucker.

However, if I was a courier chasing a few coins I wouldn't be bothered pissing anyone off so I see their perspective. Time is Money!

  9. I don't see why anyone should feel like a "sucker" for stopping at red lights. Since we were kids we were taught that you stop at red lights. Everyone else does it... why shouldn't cyclists?

I figured I should ask this question over in the proper thread for it as well... the Running Reds thread. Please respond to it over there, and keep this thread for talking about bike messengers unionizing.

A good point was brought up in the previous posts... would unionization of bike couriers bring legitimacy and/or respect to them from other road users, via couriers abiding by road rules more often?

  10. Angus said "Time is Money!" Perhaps if bike messengers didn't have to push so hard chasing such a small percentage of the receipt, safety might play a larger part in messengers decision making process.
On another thread, why do motor vehicle drivers get pissed off when they see a cyclist breaking the rules? Is it envy?

'Boy that cyclist zipping through bumper to bumper traffic jams at 4:45 pisses me off!'

Rush hour, especially on Blue Jays game days, were a great time to get rushes off. You could really make money if the grid was stopped both ways; the only danger was the door prise - sailing with in inches of hundreds of car doors at 30 kph is scary to say the least. Cabs are particularly dangerous - fares will pop out of nowhere - having decided they're feed up with paying to sit in the carbon monoxide when they could be getting a good walk in - you know - for their health. Then with out looking - cause what the hell traffic is at a dead stop - open the door and POW!

I was impressed to read about the Green Wave in Copenhagen. They have been rejigging the timing of their traffic lights on some routes so that they are timed for *cyclists*. If ya hit that first green light, ya ride for many blocks all w/green lights... Nice!

  12. Bike messengers are a small piece of the pie. CUPW wants to unionize all same day couriers. Most couriers are actually in cars and vans. The drivers are a lot less visible and organized than the bikers which makes it a lot more complicated.

Courier's status as independent contractors is dubious at best. At worst it is actually considered "disguised employment" (google it)

That won't work for cyclist or walking messengers. Cyclist and walker messengers need a union that will represent them with-in the dominant car-culture. No matter how much you try to explain to a probable driver lead union executive what it's like - and no matter how much they may even want to hear what your saying - one has to do it for a year to know what it's about (that's winter too butter-cup[not you speshul]).

How about we Ban individual transport motor vehicles from the core during business hours?!

Hamilton has 'em, for car traffic coming in and out of the steel plants. Also I believe all Toronto roads are timed to expedite rush hour traffic. If you pedal like hell you can keep up with the lights on Adelaide from Bathurst all the way to Peter.

The Europeans are way ahead of us on this. In my opinion the efficiency of our economy will be the key to success the rising epoch, the internal combustion engine will not be a part of that.

  15. Having been a messenger in the past for six years I can tell you that messengers do not make enough to pay dues to some union that will 'net them nothing. There will be no "summer over hire protection", no raises in commissions, insurance?(you've got to be kidding.. NOBODY would under write that). A union simply can;t do anything for the boys and girls on the streets. Official sub contractor status is the best they could hope. As it is they make so little most wouldn't even have to end paying taxes on what they make.
