  1. Roger Geller, Bicycle Coordinator in Portland's Office of Transportation will be in Toronto on October 21st. TCAT, in partnership with the Toronto Cyclists Union and the US Consulate General in Toronto, is happy to present a free public event to hear first-hand how Portland became the first major city in America to be designated as a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community.

TCAT is promising more details soon.

  2. TCAT just released more information about this:

TCAT, in partnership with the Toronto Cyclists Union, The Clean Air Partnership, and the US Consulate General in Toronto, is happy to present:

Livable Streets: Rethinking Urban Transportation. An evening of discussion with Roger Geller – Bicycle Coordinator, Portland, Oregon.

Roger Geller has been with the Office of Transportation in Portland, Oregon since July, 1994. Roger is the Bicycle Coordinator in the Office of the Director Planning Division. He currently works on Bikeway Network Signing, technical design for bikeways, bicycle parking, and an update to the Bicycle Master Plan.

Roger will overview what Portland has done over the past two decades to improve bicycling, what successes have been achieved, and how those successes are measured. He will talk about the four types of cyclists: "Strong & Fearless", "Enthused & Confident", "Interested but Concerned", and "Those who Never Will." He will talk about the critical roles that political leadership and citizen advocacy play in influencing change. Also, the willingness of city staff to experiment and try out new things and measuring their effectiveness. But things aren't finished with Portland. Roger's talk is, in a sense, a "Tale of Two Cities:" a city that has had significant transportation accomplishments, but one that recognizes that it has barely scratched the surface of what is necessary to truly succeed in shifting people out of single-occupancy motor vehicles to transit, biking, and walking.

    Date: Wednesday, October 21
    Time: 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Location: Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina Avenue, Suite 120

This is a free event but pre-registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited. Register on-line here.

  3. Anyone else going? I should be there tonight unless something comes up. Maybe I'll see some of you there.

  4. Not me. :(

How was it Todd? Welcome back, by the way. :)

  5. Thanks - it was a good one. Lots of good infrastructure there. They have *so* much political support to get things done there with only *four* councilors instead of what, 44 that we have so that's a challenge for us. And of course they're much smaller as well which results in their having *very* different solutions than we have. There are some things that we can take home from this though:

    - Nothing speaks like data. They got *tons* of ridership data from census info and transportation study info. Then they did creative things with it like saying (and pardon my recollection of figures they may be a little off): "If the average Portlander drives 4 miles less per day than their counterparts in other US cities, and the average cost to *go* those 4 miles is (some figure) then our citizens are spending $1.2B less on their cars and $800M of *that* is staying in the city and being spent on local businesses in their neighbourhoods as cyclists/pedestrians don't drive out to the 'burbs to spend money at Wal Mart" It's also helpful to have this data to counter the "We build the infrastructure and nobody USES it"

    - They started putting Bike Corrals (photos and info) on downtown streets in front of shops. Businesses themselves are asking in droves (there are like 50 businesses on the list) to have parking *removed* from in front of their stores and replaced with this. Why? A few reasons: They realize people come there on bikes, they realize that a sidewalk cafe has more space without bike parking on the sidewalk, people aren't gassed out by idling or parking cars, and all it takes is a big SUV or truck to park in front of your store to make it effectively invisible from the road so nobody sees it and stops. BIAs are aware that cyclists are good for business and actively working to be bike-friendly (and I think that goes hand in hand with the data thing. I think if we had data on Danforth traffic and demographics, we could make a good case for BIAs there also.

    - BIG attitude difference there. The city gov't there is basically saying that they are trying to make car travel *less* attractive for trips of 3 miles or less. (Not specifically targeting cycling but instead talking about walking, biking, transit)

    - There's lots done to make cycling visible both by the city and organizations. They have, for example, (and damn, I can't remember what they called this program so I can't link it) - programs where people go to neighbourhoods and help residents find carfree (again, bikes as well as transit or walking or combination) ways to get to work.

    - Lots of group rides - they estimated 4,000 "fun rides" per year

    - Their annual Bike Commute Challenge looks awesome - wonder if we could do something like this. (or are we already?)

Heading out now but will try to post more later...

  7. Roger Geller's presentation is now available on the TCAT website in PDF form.

  8. I like the pics of the bike corrals way better in his than others I've seen on the web. They really show what they could do for the Annex and the Danforth among other places (Little Italy, anyone?)

I'm also fond of the stat showing that when people aren't spending money on cars they're spending more time, and spending the money they saved on local business. BIAs here don't seem to grasp that. It'll come, though...

  9. Thanks for the PDF Joe, it's pretty inspirational. And yeah the corrals are droolworthy. They wouldn't look at all out of place on the Danforth.
