  1. Oh no... another cyclist has been injured after being hit by a truck near Bloor and Walmer Road (just west of Spadina).

    • As our reporter headed this afternoon to Bloor Street in Yorkville, scene of last night's death of a cyclist, she encountered a new accident scene, this one felling a female bicycle courier near Bloor Street and Walmer Road. Here is her report:

As I arrived, paramedics had just taken away the courier. At the scene John C., a Toronto bike messenger for the past decade, leaned his bicycle against a lamp post and said, "I saw blood streaming from the left side of her head. I knew her – Amy – because we used to work together for the same courier company and I still see her on the road here and there. There's no words for this."

      ...

Meantime, Eleanor Levine, who lives in the neighbourhood and had just arrived by bike to the intersection, said the bottom line is that Bloor Street needs bike lanes.

John, the courier, said he knew Darcy Allan Sheppard, 33, the courier killed last night after an "altercation between a cyclist and a driver on Bloor Street West."

Thanks to @Gavin_Smith on twitter for the tip. :)

  2. Picked this up on Twitter. I am so sorry the courier was killed.

    Car Hits Bicyclist

East Lansing police reopened a stretch of Saginaw Street after a car struck a man on a bicycle Tuesday. Police say that cyclist is now in the hospital in serious but stable condition. A car collided with the 25-year-old East Lansing resident at the intersection of Tourain and Saginaw. Police say the vehicle could have been moving at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. The accident shut down a stretch of eastbound Saginaw and closed all lanes but one heading westbound from Coolidge to Harrison Road.
When are the governments of U.S. and Canada going to wake up to the fact that the car-culture is dying and simply cannot go on forever? This means that they need to make room for the other users of the roads: cyclists, walkers, senior citizens who can't get across the road fast enough and get hit, runners, people in wheelchairs. How many people are going to be injured, maimed for life, or die before they get a clue?
And, motorists, where in the hell are you going in such a hurry that sacrificing some else's life is worth the trip for you? Guess what: You're not that important! If you were all that important, they'd give you a little red light on the top of your car and loud siren. That might be a good idea anyways in order to warn all the other users of the street that you are coming and they need to protect themselves from you!
Sorry for the sarcasm, but we lost a cyclist here last week when he was run down by a pick-up truck. I knew this guy and he was an avid cyclist, high-mileage rider, very safe on the road, and was getting ready to ride the DALMAC.
