- Cyclists angry over the death of Darcy Allan Sheppard plan to assemble tonight where their friend was killed, a move that could bring rush-hour traffic to a standstill.
A group is expected to gather on Bloor St., between Bay St. and Avenue Rd., around 5 p.m. tonight to hold a memorial for Sheppard.
Police said they are bracing for the event, but said what they will do is dependent on the cyclists.
Partner of bicycle courier Darcy Allan Sheppard, Misty, is seen placing flowers at the site where Sheppard was fatally injured last night.

I'll be going. It's hard to say what will happen. With a large turnout there just may not be the space for them on the sidewalks. And as far as I'm concerned, if the observance really is 5 minutes, I think it should be tolerated out of respect for the dead. We'll see what happens...

Cyclists ride in supportThe cyclists rang their bells as they rode across Bloor, down Yonge St., along Queen St. and then up University Ave. before stopping at a makeshift memorial and observing a moment of silence for the deceased bike courier.
While most in attendance seemed to support the courier over Michael Bryant, who not long ago was thought to be Ontario's next premier, they also agreed that all who use the roads -- cyclists, motorists and pedestrians -- need to work together to make the streets safer.
"We can't point fingers, we each need to work collectively," fellow bike courier Ron Berard said.

Cyclists at Wednesday’s gathering mourned, celebrated the victim’s life and raised their bikes in unison.
“It kind of struck a chord with me and I wanted to come out and show support,” said Jenny Hill.
"I'm a cyclist and I'd like to feel safe and from what happened it makes me wonder how safe we can be on the road,” added an attendee named Ali.

Weird that Citynews claims the road was blocked "for hours" - there was a ride that left Bay/Bloor at about 5, and got back to Avenue/Bloor at 6. By about 6:30 everyone had moved over to one eastbound lane and the sidewalk. I left at about 7, and later read in the Star that the remaining group rode to Allen Gardens.
But then there are some who consider even *riding* one's bike on Bloor "blocking traffic" so perhaps that was the perspective from which the article was written.

That's what I had thought also when I arrived. It played out totally differently. There must've been other rides happening as there was a Critical Mass-sized group at the corner of Bay/Bloor that just before the ride took off was joined by a really large group coming in from the west. Instead of going west we were, instead, escorted by the police (in a similar fashion to Bells on Bloor - corking all intersections) east on Bloor, south on Yonge, West on Queen, and north on University to Avenue and Bloor where we arrived to a street full of media trucks, talking heads and photographers.
Incidentally, I have to say I really appreciate how the police handled the whole thing. There were a few ruffled feathers that as best I could tell (from a distance - I was on the sidewalk at this point) when those in the street were asked to open up an eastbound lane. Eventually they did and the police left the scene and gathered around the corner, I suspect just in case something got out of hand - which it didn't seem to.
