  1. YorkRegion.com reports on a study out of Stouffville on helmet use amongst adults and kids:

    • For seven weeks in May and June, volunteers patrolled bike paths and city streets in search of helmet-wearing cyclists who were rewarded for donning the protective gear with gift certificates and draw tickets.

“Despite unfavourable weather conditions and less cyclists out and about on many rainy days, we are very pleased with the initial outcomes of the program,” she said.

About 250 positive-reward tickets were handed out to cyclists wearing helmets.

Discount coupons for the cranium protectors were handed out to those not wearing them. But, bery few cyclists took advantage of the savings.

However, one man did outfit himself and his whole family with certified helmets.

  2. I'm a firm believer of "Just because you wear a helmet, doesn't mean the rest of your body is prone from getting demolished" and I'm sure I'll get crap for this.

    I can has cheeseburgers?
  3. No crap from me and I wear a helmet. I do think they're a good idea but I have no illusions as to what they will and won't do for me. IMO, they're cheap brain insurance. Not guaranteed to work in all cases, and certainly won't protect the brain when the rest of the body's flattened.

That said, I find it really obnoxious the holy reverence the media gives to the helmet and the "well the idiot deserved it" attitude many reserve for people injured without their helmets. *Even* if they had no head injuries and succumbed to something else. Why is that so high on the list of questions answered by the media when reporting on accidents? Is it some sort of means of telling the reader how much sympathy they think the cyclist deserves?

  4. At least wearing a helmet, I know that hitting my head means there's a much higher level of protection surrounding my skull. When I fall (which has happened a couple of times in the last few years) I can focus more on bracing myself and protecting other parts of me, like my face, from being messed up.

I would love to not wear one, it feels great, but I know that there's always the chance that I'll smack my head on the ground and it could leave me with even minute brain damage. Very often, because you're leaning forward and cycling forward, the momentum carries you head-first, and your hands won't always be there to pad your skull. Just sayin'!

  5. I cycle have seen a cyclist fall off their bike and crack their helmet. Like most people we always have the opinion it will never happen to me. Our club, the Outing Club of East York, has a compulsory helmet policy.

Interesting, we participated in the Bike Month event in June with the city and had to be really firm about our guests using them. Some cycling rode up to the starting point with helmets carrying their helmets and only put them on to join our ride. Kinda defeats the purpose.

  6. I think the main reason why helmets aren’t worn by people and especially youngsters is the luggage feeling they often get while riding. Furthermore, wearing helmets often blocks sounds to some extent. I have found myself to be pretty comfortable riding bikes without a helmet and I use them only during long trips.
