A couple thoughts on Bloor.

First off: In my opinion, this needs to go in ASAP from Broadview to Castle Frank - *this* would solve the stupid onramp issues once and for all.

Second: Maybe not practical but if it *were* implemented the length of Bloor, what if you treated it like 401 expresss/vs collectors? For example, if you're heading westbound and want to turn right at Palmerston, get in to the right lane at Bathurst. If you want to make a left turn, make a U-turn at Christie.

A third option is to do just as they did in the video - sometimes it's separated by concrete, other times by elevated pavement that you can easily get off of to turn...

It should be obvious why this won't work on Bloor or any other not-freeway type street.

How do I get to my destination on the side of the street if I'm stuck in the middle?

Here's a case where no left turns on a streetcar route could help. I'm no city planner, but as J.J. Leeming told us many decades ago, by making way for more cars, you increase traffic congestion, not reduce it.

Dundas West businesses unite to save parking

Revitalization of area will wither if Giambroni plan to cut parking spaces is adopted in council this week, owner of Lula Lounge says

The proposal would eliminate 71 parking spaces - 27 on the north side and 44 on the south - near intersections along Dundas Street West between Dovercourt and Sterling Roads. It would also add "no standing any time" regulations at five intersections, extend rush-hour stopping prohibitions and add a handful of new left-turn bans. About 51 spots on side-streets would become pay-and-display spaces.

Mr. Giambrone, who in 2007 pushed to allow drivers to park on the strip during rush hour despite TTC objections, said the changes would eliminate congestion at intersections and speed up traffic without having to bring back a full ban on rush-hour parking.

A TTC study concluded the rush-hour exemption for Dundas West had increased delays on the Dundas 505 streetcar by up to three minutes (40 per cent), although local businesses dispute the findings. They say the study compared travel times from March, 2006, and March, 2008, but failed to take into account record snowfalls in the latter period.

"We're balancing off the needs of the businesses and the residents," Mr. Giambrone said. "This plan protects most of the parking, it creates alternatives, moves car traffic and streetcar traffic faster, and it ... continues to promote a vibrant commercial strip."

Yeah... but we don't even have to do the one-way street thing... just make left turns illegal on streetcar lines. It's not to big of an inconvenience to loop around a block, and it would speed up streetcars and traffic in general soooo much. :)

Why not? Make left turns illegal but have alternating one-way streets so that every other block or so you could make a right 3 times to get to where you're going.

I think left turns should be illegal anywhere on streetcar lines already. I'm constantly flabbergasted that this wasn't done, oh, decades ago!

We could have it on most arterial roads that don't have streetcars if we eliminated all left turns by cars. That's something streetcars could use as well to eliminate delays.

I was thinking the same thing Annie! :)

Maybe all across Bloor-Danforth? Make parking permanent and seperated lanes down the middle, with breaks at intersections? :)

[I've also edited the title of this thread a little, just to help people that may want to click through from the RSS feed or the BikingToronto or BikeTOforum twitter accounts... not that anything was wrong with the original title, Todd. :)]

Tino over at Bike Lane Diary posted a really cool video about a very busy street in NYC where they put their bike lanes right down the middle of the street instead of at the side.

This could work pretty well on something like Lakeshore, the Allen Expressway, or even some of the busier inner-suburb arterials like Dufferin.

More info is at the original Streetsblog post as well.
