This coming Sunday, September 27, 2009 I'll be heading out on the Durham Region Tour de Greenbelt. My mother, brother, girlfriend and I will be tackling the 43 km ride and are really looking forward to it. I'll post photos and my story to my blog once we're done.

Here's more information on the ride (PDF) Durham Region Tour de Greenbelt

It’s good for your health and good for the planet — what could be bad?

You are encouraged to hop on your bike and participate in the York Region leg of the Tour de Greenbelt Saturday.

Rather than worrying about catching up with Lance Armstrong, participants can enjoy an at-you-own-pace ride through the Greenbelt.

The family-oriented ride is aimed at giving you a chance to “stop and smell the Greenbelt.”

Three cycling routes of 25, 50 and 100 kilometres along paved trails and roads that pass landmarks such as Fairy Lake, Roger’s Reservoir and the Pheasant Run Golf Course.

Riders should check in at 8:30 a.m. with the ride beginning at 10 a.m.

From noon to 5 p.m., an end-of-ride barbecue will include entertainment and Greenbelt-produced food.

All three routes begin and end at the Newmarket Main Street Farmer’s Market and free parking is available.

The “fresh air festival on wheels” began Sept.. 12 in St. Catherines-Niagara and continued Sept. 13 in Burlington-Halton.

After the York Region segment it concludes Sept. 27 in Toronto-Durham.

You can learn more about the ride and register at www.tourdegreenbelt.ca

WHAT RIDERS NEED TO KNOW

• Registration is $40 but children under 14 are free if registered by an accompanying adult.

• Fee includes snacks and beverages at rest stations and a rider kit with sponsor goodies. Return transportation is provided to the start point.

• Helmets are mandatory.

• You can register by phone at 416-960-0001 or 1-888-960-0030. A $5 surcharge applies for same-day registration.
