Thanks also for posting the film. I seem to remember trying to use embed code for films before but with no luck so good to see it works now.

It would be very useful if city staff did more extensive cyclist counts pre- and post- bikelane installation, and also on popular "entry-points" on bikelaned routes into downtown. :)

I should also say that perhaps the time has come for us as cyclists to point a little less at Copenhagen and Portland (great successes, great places to get ideas from) and a little more toward NYC. So often when I've seen or participated in debates with folks who don't want cycling infrastructure the response to "Copenhagen/Portland does..." is either:

- Yes, but they don't get much snow
- Yes, but Toronto's big and they're small
- Yes, but space is a premium here

NYC is, in many ways, very much like Toronto. The only difference I can see is the political will. Hopefully next year's election (and maybe the Pan-Am games) brings a bit more of that here as well...

NYC Shows building infrastructure increases ridership

Holy cow - in the past two years, NYC with the help of Janette Sadik-Khan, NYC commissioner of transportation has put in a tremendous amount of cycling infrastructure including 200 miles (>320 KM) of bike lanes in the past 3 years. The result? A 66% increase in ridership in the past two years.

From Streetfilms:

On the heels of 2008's unprecedented growth of 35% in commuter cycling, this year the New York City Department of Transportation measured an additional gain of 26%, putting the total 2007 to 2009 increase at a whopping 66%!

Of course much of that can be attributed to NYC installing 200 miles of bike routes in the past three years, including innovative amenities such as the 8th and 9th Avenue cycletracks that separate car traffic from bikers. Safer streets encourage more people to ride, more riders encourage more people to ride, more riders on the road means cyclists are more visible. It's a cycling mathematical equation that I'm sure "Cycling Al" Einstein would have approved of.

In fact, the numbers of cyclists on the roads have tripled since the year 2000. So we thought it would be good to get a reality check from riders as to how it is going out there. Overwhelmingly, folks we interviewed said it is getting quite crowded out there on our streets and bridges and in most ways that's a good thing!

If you build it, they *will* come.

M4X (Don Valley to Sherbourne (south side): 18.6%
M4W (North side of Bloor to just past Yonge - goes WAY north): 45.4%
M4Y (Sherbourne to Bay - south side): 16.1%
M5R (Yonge to Bathurst - North Side): 28.2%
M5S (Bay to Bathurst - South Side): 17.7%
M5G (Bathurst to Ossington - North/South Side): 32.6%
M6H (Ossington to just past Lansdowne): 35.0%

While the mode share is strongly leaning towards transit, there are significant numbers of cyclists and pedestrians as well there. In fact, between Yonge and Lansdowne, between 6-10% of people commute by bike with similar numbers of pedestrians.

All of the streets in the area have sidewalks even with such a 'low' mode share. Why can't we get a bike lane on Bloor?

A little something to know when a driver says HE is subsidizing YOU. It is the other way around!

"A low-income earner is likely to spend a larger portion of their money on basic goods and services that build in the cost of parking. Supermarkets, for example, recoup the cost of parking in their grocery prices. Low-income earners are more likely to carpool, use public transit, walk or cycle, so they are less likely to benefit from the parking they are forced to subsidize. The cost of higher density housing is inflated by parking regulations, too."

Don't be put off by the phrase "low income earner", although that is part of the prejudice. ANY person paying rent or property taxes who cycles to work and any person who cycles to shop is subsidizing the automobile.

The reason we can't get bike lanes on streets like Queen isn't because of the street parking. It's because of the streetcar.
It wouldn't make sense to have streetcars and regular cars share a lane while bikes get one to themselves yet. You can't ban cars from streetcar routes yet, but I hope that day comes soon.

Wow.. great thought-out and explained article, Bern.

Great sum up too:

There is a dangerous tendency to set bikes against cars or drivers against transit users or even the CAA against Transportation Demand Management professionals. Such a Car-Wars mentality serves no one except unscrupulous news sellers. All modalities are appropriate and needed. We are missing only a balance.

I only drive (never bike, since my bike got into a quarrel with a street-car track!), but I am very sympathetic to cyclists. I appreciate that they make the road less congested, which I gather most drivers do not. I do find that when I am about to overtake a cyclist (or the other way around in morning rush hour!) I move over a bit to leave room. I do this to be courteous, but it is stressful knowing that I could make a mistake that could hurt or kill someone. I saw a cyclist get cut off a couple days ago, which resulted in her front wheel getting twisted. She was not hurt. The driver appeared put out that a cyclist was in his way. As I straightened her wheel for her, I saw how shaken she was. It seemed to me half scared from the helplessness of a close call and half anger at the unevenness of the argument between a SUV and a bike. I find the growing 'quarrel' between cars and cyclists one of the saddest elements of Toronto's streets. It serves no useful purpose.

This is one of my favourite bike lanes, it's rare to have such a long stretch on an semi-arterial road given over to bikes. The problem with speeding cars is the same on every major street, no different here.

Yes. The street is a 50KM zone. I've raised the issue with Councillor Milczyn and the traffic folk on several occasions but nothing ever happens. BTW, I take umbrageto Royal York betweem Dundas and Bloor being called suburbia. It's also a minor-arterial road with nothing but homes between Bloor and Dundas. ;)

That is certainly an issue with suburban arterial roads. Bike lanes need to be separated where motor vehicles can (and do) reach speeds that far exceed anyone on a bicycle.

What is the speed limit on that street supposed to be? I'm guessing 50 km/h?

It was great to see the City add bike lanes to Royal York Road during the redesign of the road back in 2007.

Unfortunately, the street lacks any speed related signage which means that most drivers (TTC buses included) elect to travel at between 50k and 80k effectively scaring the cyclists back unto the sidewalk.

Seems that 5 inches of white paint isn't quite enough to make kids and adults feel like they can safely commute to work or school on the road. Can you blame them?

Sussex and the Easternmost part of Lennox, between Bathurst and Spadina, could use contraflow lanes. It's one of those streets where one block is a 1-way in one direction and the next block is a 1-way in the other direction. It runs parallel to the section of Hallam that doesn't have any bike lanes so provides a nice alternative. My son bikes to his diving class at UofT and I would feel more comfortable if he biked back along Sussex rather than along Hallam, though better still - finish the bike lanes on Hallam! But even with bike lanes on Hallam, Sussex would continue to by used, I'm sure. There are always tons of cyclists on it.

Since writing this article I've used this bike lane a dozen or so times. The entire trip from Dundas up to Bloor is fairly enjoyable and kinda scenic too. Passing through residential streets with much quieter traffic gives you the opportunity to see how people live in a neighbourhood. It's just a shame that this lane dumps you out on Bloor, ruining the fun of the previous leg of my journey.

Just got back from hauling a trailer full of stuff from our apartment on the east end to our new house on the west end and I have to say, while I am annoyed by folks parked in bike lanes when I'm riding day to day, it's particularly annoying with a heavy trailer that's more difficult to squeeze past, not as maneuverable, and not as easy to quickly come up to speed.

Don't mind me, just whining a bit here.

On the other hand, once I got past downtown and onto the Harbord bike lane things were really nice. I didn't often have much reason to ride that before and am sad I didn't. Mostly clear lanes, low traffic. Between that one and riding St. George it was a nice glimpse of how things *could* be...

Here's a relevant "stunt racing" article from CTV.ca

Judge rules Ont. stunt driving law unconstitutional

Updated: Wed Sep. 09 2009 1:38:30 PM

ctvtoronto.ca

The Ontario Provincial Police will continue to nab excessive speeders and charge them under the province's stunt-driving laws despite a judge's ruling that the legislation is unconstitutional.

Sgt. Dave Woodford told CTV Toronto the legislation is still being enforced because the law has been effective in reducing the number of fatalities on Ontario highways by about 30 per cent in the last two years since its been inacted.

"This piece of legislation is helping us get to be number one (in road safety) not only in Canada but in the world," he said.

Napanee Judge G. J .Griffin ruled Friday that convicting someone who is "morally blameless" of an offence that carries a jail sentence breaches the Charter of Rights.

Toronto-based lawyer James Morton said he was "really surprised" at the decision but that the judge is probably right.

By law, speeding is considered an absolute liability, which means a driver can't claim he didn't know he was speeding as a defence. However, the driver could very well be "morally blameless," meaning the motorist thought he was going at the speed limit even though he was not, Morton said.

"The defence of due diligence is not a defence because of the way the legislation is written," he told ctvtoronto.ca. "You would still be convicted even if you tried not to speed."

The judge was presiding over a case involving a grandmother in her 60s, who was nabbed by police for driving more than 50 kilometres faster than the posted speed limit on Highway 7.

The woman said she sped up in order to pass a truck. However, she said, the truck also sped up which forced her to speed up even more to pass him. The evidence given by the police officer who issued the ticket demonstrated that the driver slowed her vehicle to 110 kilometres an hour after passing the truck.

On Sept. 30, 2007, Ontario enacted provisions of the Safer Roads for a Safer Ontario Act that allowed officers to immediately seize the car of any motorist caught driving more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit. Aside from having their car towed for a week, motorists automatically have their licence suspended for seven days. Drivers also face a hefty minimum fine of $2,000.

"The judge didn't say licence suspension or a car tow was unconstitutional. What he said is that a conviction for stunt driving by speeding is unconstitutional," Morton said.

Street racers who are nabbed under this legislation would not be affected by the judge's ruling. They would be tried under a different subsection of the law that deals with racing in particular, Morton explained.

The Crown would have a hard time reversing the judge's decision at the Court of Appeals, he said.

Prosecutors had a chance to argue the judge's decision using Section 1 of the Charter which essentially says that a breach of the Charter can be justified if it shown to be reasonable in a free and democratic society. However, in court Friday the Crown conceded it could not argue with the judge.

Morton said there are hundreds of cases in the system where people have been charged with stunt driving. Now the defendants have an excellent chance of getting the charge thrown out in court.

"This (ruling) is very important," he said. "It seems to me that the judge is probably right but my instinct is that it can be reasonably justified. Going over 50 kilometres is a serious offence."

With files from CTV Toronto's Austin Delaney

Quite frankly, if you're going 50% over the legal speed limit, you are performing a stunt. You may believe you're simply passing slower moving traffic, but when that traffic is also exceeding the speed limit you're making the problem worse.

And in this woman's case, she did this on Highway 7... a highway that has pedestrian crosses, stop lights and many roads that turn on to it. This wasn't even a 400 series... so 110 km/h is still 30 km/h faster than she should have been going legally.

The problem is that drivers feel that their time, their space and their use of the road is the only one that matters. Clearly, this is how Kenzie feels. Our roads are public space with rules and laws that are designed to improve the safety of EVERYONE using them, not just the people in steel boxes with airbags and crumple zones and roll bars.

I'm no fan of Bryant or Fantino politically, but I stopped reading when he called the street racing law "ridiculous." I wonder if he's driving one of those sportscars you see screaming along the 401, weaving in and out of traffic and passing in shoulders and merge lanes every morning?

MTB - just to let you know, I've edited your post above where you call Kenzie a d***. As Todd mentioned, The Forum is a place for civil discussion, and no matter your personal opinions of Kenzie as a man, we should strive for discourse and not insults on this subject.

If you feel obliged to personally insult people, there are lots of other cycling discussion boards that seem to welcome things like that. :)

Here's one thing that I've always been disgusted by as a car driver.

Motorists hate the majority of other motorists.

"That idiot just cut me off. Nice signal their, buddy. Pick a lane, moron!"

It's in the advertising, too. Cars speed along empty side roads, or quickly pass by lesser cars when they show up. The car advertised is never stuck in traffic or searching for a parking space. And, if the kids act up, just turn on the video games or dvd player.

If the symphony of horns I hear from my apartment is any indication, there's a lot of anger on the streets in our city, and cities around the world.

Is there competition on the streets amongst cyclists? You bet! Do we want each other to die in a flameball of steel and gasoline? Not that I know of.

The crazy thing is, many, many, many people just see this as how things are. You get in a car to drive in to the city, and you have to do it with all these other jerks who won't signal or will speed or will try and ruin your morning coffee, sandwich and reading, or whatever they do in their cars.

Articles like Kenzie's unfortunately express the same "ideas" of suburban and urban commuters who drive daily (I used quotes because I don't believe rational thought goes in to his arguments much as MilitantMTBer points out).

The bicycle may not replace cars, but changing how we commute and where we commute to is needed.

Bike lanes as experienced by a driver

We're moving from the east end to the west end and to get a head start I picked up a large-ish zipcar and drove a few loads of boxes over this morning. Taking a few trips I was able to experience the other side of things on a few different streets and it was interesting to experience the other side.

First off, there were a number of cyclists on the roads even in the morning. Only one that I'd call a scofflaw, blowing a red light at a Tee intersection. Pretty low risk all things considered and (likely to get flamed by a driver for saying this) actually worked out better because we were not having to negotiate for the space when parked cars got rid of his lane just ahead.

The most noticeable thing, though, was that I *really* appreciated it when bikes were given their own space. I actually preferred the streets with bike lanes as a driver as well.

Bloor and Queen were a bit nervewracking with their parked cars and narrow lanes. There are definitely some tight spaces and a number of spots where negotiation between cyclist and driver was required. I don't mind this but it is a point that requires more attention and, as I know how it feels on the other side, it was a little stressful.

Richmond wasn't bad at all - not really that many cyclists at all so not really a conflict zone as a driver. I don't often go here and it was actually exciting to think that it and Adelaide are actually being looked at by the city for physically-separated bike lanes. It'd be an ideal spot for that leaving in most cases 3 lanes of traffic moving.

College and Harbord were both my favourites, though. Bike lanes were there and this morning mostly free of parked cars. The result is that while I had to be aware as always of bikes' presence the number of times some sort of 'negotiation' was required was minimal.

All that said, I'm glad to have turned the car in. I can see why drivers can be grumpy - it's pretty stressful (and I didn't even care about getting anywhere at a particular speed).

Yeah, I know, preaching to the choir in this case but I have to wonder what others' experiences are, particularly those who get around mostly by car. Is *their* impression that streets with bike lanes are less stressful?
