The Benefits of TOD

For the first chapter in our Moving Beyond the Automobile series we’ll take a look at Transit-Oriented Development, more commonly known by its “TOD” acronym in transportation industry circles. TOD is a high-density, mixed-use residential area with access to ample amounts of transportation. There are usually many transportation nodes within its core and contains a walkable and bike-able environment.

  1. I think when people hear ‘increased density’ in relation to city planning they flash to images of over crowded run down older parts of a city. Those places where I’ve always enjoyed living, but I can image that for those who’s North American dream included big yards and two car garages in subdivisions near undeveloped country side, ‘increased density’ must remind them of the one hour commute times that end with grid lock in the core and expensive parking.

    TOD is outside that car centric box on so many levels, it must be hard to imagine. The video does a great job realizing the vision. Thanks for posting.
