Spotted near College Street and Dovercourt, a pair of bicycles with stunning most likely custom and handmade wooden crate baskets. The one pictured above had a curved bottom, which may help keep round objects from rolling around. Really dig the cut outs and the large size of both of these.

If anyone has any information on who made these, please share it in the comments below. I really like just how sturdy these looked, mine is starting to fail the test of time.
Great idea there are some really light weight woods out there. As soon as I saw the picture though I wanted a closer look at the joinery.
Unfortunately they’re butt joints, pin nailed and glued. I was hoping to see dove tail joints which stay locked by design. Also, an out door rated glue.
On the TV show “The New Yankee Workshop” I watched Master Carpenter Norm Abram use a glue on a Adirondack Chair project that activates when you add water perfect for outdoor projects. Norm says the glue actually gets stronger after each rain! He should know, he’s been building outdoor furniture for 30 years.
As well, butt joints and pins won’t stand up the the constant shocks that is bicycling – but dovetailed corners and outdoor glue should do the trick. I’d use birch, which is inexpensive, light weight and fine gained enough to do the dovetail joinery called for in this application.
- imho.
Awesome observations, Michael.
