A Bike Corral on Spadina!

Really hope to start seeing more bike corrals like this in Toronto. What’s one less car parking space when you can fit a dozen or more bicycles?

Here’s a short video of how these work in Portland:

Looks like this is in a lay-by (is that what they are called?). Very cool!

Here’s what it looked like before from Google Street View: http://bit.ly/9TIX5K

Yvonne Bambrick of the Toronto Cyclists Union posted photos on her Facebook page and the racks take up 1/3 if not 1/2 of the recessed parking area now.

Spacing has posted an update on how this bike parking corral came to be. It boils down to about 15 months of contact with City Councillor Adam Vaughan and the TPA: http://spacingtoronto.ca/2010/07/13/bike-parking-takes-over-car-parking-spaces/

15 months? That sounds about right. If I recall correctly, Adam Vaughan is not too keen on the idea of taking out car parking to put in bike infrastructure.

. . . I’m a little worried about those flimsy bollards – the ones in Portland look a little more substantial. What do you reckon?

Is that just out front of Dark Horse? That’ll be good for business.

I’m hoping that no one decides to test out the strength of those bollards. They’re designed to be removed in the winter for snow clearance while I believe the Portland ones are there year round.

Yeah, that’s Dark Horse you can see on the left. That building is also home to Spacing and the Toronto Cyclists Union. They put in a bunch of new post and rings there a little while back here as well.

I seeeeeee . . . very interesting. So the TCU/Spacing can give themselves parking spaces as well as a pat on the back. :P
Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s awesome.

They *do* like giving themselves pats on the backs, but in this case deservedly so.

I hope they’re serious about getting more of these corrals around the city.
