 Watch For Bikes Initiative [The Urban Country]

Watch For Bikes InitiativeIn lieu of proper bike infrastructure, how can drivers and cyclists better co-exist on our streets? This is a question that is pondered frequently on this website and was the basis for our ‘i share the road’ campaign.

An annual initiative called “Watch For Bikes” also attempts to address this by encouraging safe driving and bicycling. The initiative was created by a partnership between the Canadian Automobile Association and the City of Toronto.

Giro d’Italia winner rode a bike made by Toronto-based company Cervélo SALast weekend, Ryder Hesjedal won the Giro d’Italia road cycling race, and he rode a Toronto brand’s bicycle to win it. Cervélo’s P5  (seen above) isn’t the company’s first high-performance product, nor is this the brand’s first instance of media recognition—it was in the spotlight in 2003 for sponsoring Team CSC, a Dutch outfit that rivaled superstar Lance Armstrong at the Tour de France (and, subsequently,members of Cervélo-affiliated Team CSC were accused of doping, so there’s that press to remember as well).

TTC’s Victoria Park station now features secure bike parkingToronto’s second indoor bike station has opened at the TTC’s Victoria Park station, providing secure parking for up to 52 bikes.

“I think it’s a great arrangement. We have the bike racks on our buses, but once you get to the subway station you’re left scratching your head,” said city councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, who chairs Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.

 

Driver surrenders after hit-and-run hurts 3 cyclists [Toronto Star]

Three cyclists were hit from behind in rural Caledon Thursday night by a vehicle that left the accident scene. Ontario Provincial Police say the driver later turned himself in.

The cyclists were heading north when they were hit from behind on the Gore Rd., south of King St., around 8:15 p.m.

Two of them were sent to a Brampton hospital by ambulance, one in serious but stable condition. The third cyclist was treated at the scene.

The TTC streetcar system requires tracks to be replaced on an ongoing basis, which wreaks havoc on traffic flow as vehicles are forced into a narrowed space to make room for the work.

The inconvenience is worsened when the replacement rails are stored on the street long before the work begins, which increases the time that traffic is pinched.

Cycle Toronto’s Director of Membership and Outreach, Jared Kolb, spoke with OpenFile this afternoon.

“If there’s anything to this it would be an outrage, right on the anniversary on the removal of Jarvis, Pharmacy and Birchmount. It’s a major lack of respect for anyone who chooses to get on a bike in Toronto,” says Kolb.

Kolb says that Cycle Toronto hasn’t seen text of a motion or a report so far.

Cyclist struck by TTC bus near Bayview and Eglinton [CBC]

A male cyclist was struck by a TTC bus in midtown Toronto on Tuesday afternoon.

The collision happened on Bayview Avenue at Roehampton Avenue, a block north of Eglinton Avenue, around 2 p.m.

The cyclist was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Making my own Bike LaneWhen I arrived at the meetup location, I felt like royalty with volunteers and the artist herself prepping my bike to draw a liquid chalk line while I biked along Danforth Ave.

It was so fun to ride back where I already rode to see my liquid chalk trail. If only real bike lanes were this easy to create!

I’ve used public transit bike racks in BC before and the ones on the TTC buses are exactly the same. You just push up on a metal handle, pull the whole rack down towards you, lift your bike into the wheel slots and then secure your front wheel with an expandable leaver thingy (yes, thingy).

We will be meeting at 6 PM at Allan Gardens whereupon we will be cycling North on Jarvis to Charles St. East, East on Charles St. East to Church, North on Church to Bloor and then looping back South to Jarvis and Queen where we will turn and end up at City Hall where we will celebrate our cycling culture and show Toronto that we mean business.

Clean, two-wheel transportation is in the spotlight for the next few weeks as Bike Month kicked off across the GTA on Monday.

Dozens of cyclists celebrated the special month and Bike to Work Day on Monday by converging at Yonge and Bloor streets for a communal ride, or group commute, down to Nathan Phillips Square for an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast, organized by the city and Cycle Toronto.

“People will always associate us with the first time a Canadian won [a professional cycling event]and did it on a Canadian bike. That’s pretty special,” Mr. White, Cervélo’s chief executive officer, said Monday.

Although bike manufacturers often benefit from a bump in sales when one of their machines ends up in the winner’s circle – notably Trek Bicycle Corp., the sponsor of past Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong – “the Giro is not going to do the same thing for us,” Mr. White said.

The Bike Month Group Commute is the kick-off event for Bike Month in Toronto (a month later than a lot of cities in North America).

This year I was able to wake up on time and joined the group commute at Yonge and Bloor to ride down to City Hall a la Critical Mass style.

I even got to meet Laurie Featherstone of Featherstone 2 wheels green delivery during the ride! Ok, ok, so I introduced myself in a sort of fan-girlish manner…

Website rates Canadian cities on bike-ability

Researchers at UBC and Simon Fraser University have come up with a way to rate how good major Canadian cities are for cycling.

Modelled on a site called Walk-Score, researchers tallied up three factors: topography, bike accessibility to shops and the number of bike lanes. The results are then colour-coded on a map posted on a website.

He did a computer search on the bylaw noted on the signs — 319-69 — which later became 1969-319, and “it turns out the bylaw was repealed 15 years ago and the city just hadn’t taken down the signs.”

The Toronto police officer in the cruiser behind her pulled the councillor over and reminded her she had to come to a full stop, like other vehicles.

“I said I was sorry, and that I would be more mindful in the future,” said Ms. Stintz, who tweeted about her encounter as a public service announcement. “The way she was scolding me, I’m fairly certain she did not know who I was,” she laughed.

It’s becoming a not-so-proud tradition in Toronto: propose a bike lane, approve a bike lane, and then delay building the bike lane.

The city has consistently fallen short of targets set out in the official Bike Plan 10 years ago, and it appears the separated cycle track planned for Wellesley St. is the latest project to be pushed back. According to a report going before the public works committee next Wednesday, the separated lane from Queen’s Park Crescent to Sherbourne Ave. won’t be completed until 2013, a year later than originally planned.
