Ajax is a “Bicycle Friendly Community” today!

The following is from a press release from the Town of Ajax, who will be becoming a “Bicycle Friendly Community” today.  It will be one of the first communities in Canada to receive this honour from the League of American Bicyclists, who are expanding this designation to Canadian communities in partnership with the Share the Road Coalition.

The Bicycle Friendly Communities Program requires that municipalities complete a thorough application. They are then judged in five categories often referred to as the Five Es. These are Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation & Planning. A community must demonstrate achievements in each of the five categories in order to be considered for an award. Communities with more significant achievements in these areas receive superior awards.

Ajax is one of only four Ontario communities to be receiving this honour. Ajax is receiving the Bronze level designation and is joining Windsor, Waterloo and Ottawa in receiving their designations.

Ajax welcomes cyclists and first-ever “Bicycle-Friendly Community” honour
Just as bicyclists participating in the annual Great Waterfront Trail Adventure roll in for their overnight stay in Ajax, the Town will be receiving its latest honour – a “Bicycle-Friendly Community” designation from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition.
This is the first time the designations have been awarded in Ontario and Ajax is one of only four Ontario communities to be receiving this honour. Ajax is receiving the Bronze level designation and is joining Windsor, Waterloo and Ottawa in receiving their designations.
On Monday, July 4, approximately 250 cyclists from across North America will be arriving in Ajax as part of the eight-day, 720 km tour starting in Niagara-on-the-Lake and ending at the Ontario/Quebec border. The next morning, the cyclists start the day with sunrise yoga by the lake, a healthy breakfast and official send-off by Mayor Steve Parish and Council at Rotary Park. Here, Mayor Parish will receive this international distinction from Eleanor McMahon, President and Founder of Share the Road, who is traveling from Burlington to make the presentation.
“This event and the designation is a celebration of our Town’s cycling accomplishments,” says Mayor Steve Parish. “The Town of Ajax has made it a priority to be the leader in providing cycling infrastructure for the community as a means to create recreational and tourism opportunities. We are committed to providing a safe, eco-friendly and cycling friendly community and we’re proud to be recognized for our efforts.”
The Town is also celebrating the kick-off of Trails Open 2011 by inviting residents to join the cyclists participating in the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure and ride Ajax’s Waterfront Trail from Rotary Park to the Carruthers Marsh Pavilion. This stretch of the Waterfront Trail is approximately six km in length and suitable for riders of all ages and abilities.
Details of the July 5 activities are:
Date: Tuesday, July 5
Time: 7:30 a.m.
Place: Rotary Park Pavilion (177 Lake Driveway W.)

Ajax businesses that register with the network will receive a Welcome Cyclists Network tool kit, a Welcome Cyclist window decal to showcase their participation, and will be listed as a cycling friendly business on the Welcome Cyclists Network website and included in other group marketing promotional materials. OH YEAH! The Viaduct bikelanes get MORE green paint!

Well, I don’t know what’s going on.  This is a level of paying attention to cycling infrastructure on the Bloor Viaduct that, quite frankly, I thought I’d never see (and it pissed me off, often). But now, after the green paint that was laid down late last week in the bikelane, there is now MORE […]

FACEPALM: City closes Hoskin bikelane for PanAm Games

What’s a great idea?  Closing down one of the busiest bikelanes in the city and not providing a detour that’s safe for cyclists (and pedestrians) because of the “short distance of the inconvenience”. A sign erected on June 25 indicates the closure of the Hoskin bike lane for two months during the Pan Am Games. […]
