Photos from a BikingToronto Firepit Social

One of the great things about running a website about biking in Toronto and building it up into the largest and most popular one is all the people you meet.  With a few exceptions, everyone I meet through my work with BikingToronto is kind, generous and giving, and I’ve made some good friends.

A few weeks ago we had a BikingToronto Social at the Madison, and we’re planning a “Biking Toronto Ice Cream Social” for mid-July… and last week a few of us got together for a few hours around a firepit at Dufferin Grove Park and chatted, ate chips and roasted marshmallows.

I’m sharing a few photos from the evening because it was fun, and pictures are pretty.

The firepit crew was Todd (of the Long Ride East), Sage (of Quirky Nomads), Daegan (of Todd & Sage), Annie, Georgette (of Georgie_Grrl on Flickr), Derek, Andre, Hyedie (of the Toronto Girls Cupcake Ride), Kathryn, Duncan (of Duncan’s City Ride) and myself.

Almost all of these photos are by Georgette on Flickr (the 1st and 3rd are by me).  You should check out her photos.

Getting Ready

Annie "the Fire Queen" - she took a fire certification course to book the firepit, and Georgette made her a funny little crown in recognition.

Derek and Annie coax the Fire Gods to come out and play

The wet ground was not co-operating. We let Derek work his magic...

Derek loves marshmallows

The one pic of Hyedie without marshmallows on her stick. ;)

We’ll let you know when we finalize plans for the Ice Cream Social… it’ll probably involve bike riding and ice cream! :)

OH YEAH! Suburban Etobicoke councillor changes vote on Bloor bike lanes to a ‘yes’

More proof that politicians who actually take time to understand the issues are, in fact, better politician. “Riding it, you do realize a separate bike lane is infinitely safer than riding with traffic,” Campbell said. The councillor was leaning toward voting against the pilot project before his daughter started texting him, praising the bike lane […]

OH YEAH: Bloor bike lane pilot debate flow chart!

Well this is just amazing.   A complete flow chart that breaks down all the objections to a Bloor bike lane pilot and why none of the objections are valid. It was created by @the416anthill, @iainmcampbell and @antonlodder for Ward 19 Bikes. Source: Bloor bike lane pilot debate flow chart

NEWS: Vision Zero supported but not Bloor bike lanes?

City Council votes on the Bloor bike lane pilot this morning (it’s scheduled as the first item, at 9:30 – watch it stream on youtube here), and here’s a good piece from Albert Koehl in Dandyhorse about the project at the Public Works Committee last week: If Bloor isn’t safe, why do cyclists continue to […]

VIDEO: What’s it like to ride Bloor Street without bike lanes?

Metro Morning‘s Matt Galloway decided to document what it was like riding Bloor St. without bikelanes, in advance of the City Council vote about a bike lane pilot: What does it look like to ride a bike down Bloor Street in rush hour without bike lanes? I strapped a GoPro onto my helmet to find out. […]
