Introducing “Rate My Velo” – A Rating Site for Bicyclists

James Schwartz, Toronto cyclist and founder of the Urban Country has a great new project on the go – Rate My Velo, a rating site for bicyclists.

The site is set up so people can look at 2 photographs of regular people in regular clothes riding regular bikes, and vote on which photo they like the best.  It’s a great way to get the point across that not every cyclist on the road is training for the Tour de France.  The vast majority of us are just getting around the city.

I’ll let James explain it in more detail:

The premise behind the website is that it will show bicycling not as a sport, but as a pragmatic tool for transportation. Regular people in regular clothes on bicycles.

Now that is sexy.

The purpose of the site isn’t different than the mission of The Urban Country. The difference is that Rate My Vélo has the potential to reach beyond the “bicycle advocacy” world.

Like most bicycle advocacy websites, I’m often “preaching to the choir” here on The Urban Country – which is great, but to have a bigger impact, we need to reach beyond the choir and promote bicycling to regular people who wouldn’t spend time on a bicycle advocacy blog.

Check it out and start rating photos.

It’s very addictive.
