Bixi Toronto is (almost) Ready to Launch

Bixi TorontoIt’s something that we at BikingToronto have known for a while, that in addition to having 1000+ subscribers, Bixi Toronto is just putting the finishing touches on securing $600,000 in corporate sponsorships for the first 3 years of the program:

BIXI Toronto has met its key targets, though a two week extension to today’s sponsorship deadline means that an official announcement has yet to be made. After the bike-sharing program reached 1000 members on October 18, the remaining hurdle for approval from the City of Toronto was the need to secure $600,000 in sponsorship funds (over each of the next three years) by November 30.

They have — mostly. Daniel Egan, City of Toronto manager of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, told me over the phone that “BIXI has essentially met all the milestones, but the sponsorship deadline was extended by a couple of weeks to finalize some of the details.” That’s why there hasn’t been a formal announcement — the program isn’t actually officially a go until this happens. But, regardless of this slight extension, Egan confirmed that the May 2011 “launch date remains the same.” [BlogTO]

BikingToronto publicized the heck out of Bixi back in the days before it reached 1000 subscribers (it’s our duty as Toronto’s Bicycle Blog and Info ResourceBixi is going to transform downtown Toronto!) and since then knew that the corporate sponsorship money was lined up… but it was just waiting on some final touches (as Dan Egan expressed above to BlogTO).

Good to see lots on General Interest sites like BlogTO are taking an active interest too!

NEWS: Cyclist dead following 2-vehicle collision on Dufferin St.

The cyclist wasn’t on the road (standing on sidewalk), but car struck a hydro pole, which then killed them. Awful. A cyclist has been confirmed dead by York Regional Police following a vehicle collision on Dufferin St. north of Steeles Ave. on Monday evening. Two cyclists were on the sidewalk corner of Dufferin St. and […]

OH YEAH! The Viaduct bikelanes get MORE green paint!

Well, I don’t know what’s going on.  This is a level of paying attention to cycling infrastructure on the Bloor Viaduct that, quite frankly, I thought I’d never see (and it pissed me off, often). But now, after the green paint that was laid down late last week in the bikelane, there is now MORE […]

FACEPALM: City closes Hoskin bikelane for PanAm Games

What’s a great idea?  Closing down one of the busiest bikelanes in the city and not providing a detour that’s safe for cyclists (and pedestrians) because of the “short distance of the inconvenience”. A sign erected on June 25 indicates the closure of the Hoskin bike lane for two months during the Pan Am Games. […]

OH YEAH: Easy Bikes – A New Name for Upright Bikes?

Interesting article from Momentum Mag from earlier this month: Did the Wall Street Journal just rename the most accessible, useful, and comfortable of all bicycle styles? Upright bicycles, sometimes referred to by Momentum Mag as city bikes, are hands down the best style of bicycle for daily use. A relaxed frame geometry and swept-back handlebars combine to […]

OH YEAH! The Bloor Viaduct bikelane gets some green paint

Check this out.  The most dangerous section of the Bloor Viaduct bikelane has changed, with a bit of green paint. I tweeted out a quick photo (above) of it this morning as I was headed to work, but took some more (below) as I rode the paint on the way home today. It’s not perfect, […]
