Toronto’s could-be public bike-share system is still 350 subscriptions short of rolling into the downtown core.
BIXI Toronto is scheduled to be launched in May 2011 – but only if the proposed service attracts 1,000 subscribers by Nov. 30.
The bike share would be available year-round in Toronto. A 12-month membership is $95.
Squads of BIXI promoters have been blitzing street corners across downtown for the past couple of months to introduce Torontonians to the bikes and docking stations, said Roger Plamondon, chairman of the board for the Public Bike System Company.
I don’t really have any doubt that we’ll reach that 1,000 subscription mark. And it’s a very good sign that 650 people have already signed up, even with the small initial launch area that Phase I of Bixi will have.
Have you signed up yet? It’s $95 (+HST = $107.35) for an entire year! That gives you unlimited free rides for an entire year (as long as your trip is less than 30 minutes).
There will be 1,000 Bixi bikes sprinkled all over the downtown core (click for map) at 80 Bixi stations… all between Bloor, Jarvis, Lake Ontario and Spadina. The perfect transportation option for downtown zipping around.
