Bixi Toronto had a demo station set up at the Brickworks yesterday, and mayoral candidate (and possible Rob Ford killer, depending on how anti-Ford sentiment coalesces) George Smitherman decided to stop by, try it out, and sign up.
Smitherman has been a little bit all over the map on the bike issue during this campaign. He wants to “pause” the Bike Plan and take a look at how to implement cycling infrastructure “where it makes sense” and has also called for curbs on bikelanes to separate bike and car traffic.
Whatever your opinion on the man or his policies, I give him credit for signing up for Bixi. We need Bixi in 2011 to make Toronto (at least the downtown part) the sustainable and green city it can be.
Have you signed up yet? It’s $95 (+HST = $107.35) for an entire year! That gives you unlimited free rides for an entire year (as long as your trip is less than 30 minutes).
There will be 1,000 Bixi bikes sprinkled all over the downtown core (click for map) at 80 Bixi stations… all between Bloor, Jarvis, Lake Ontario and Spadina. The perfect transportation option for downtown zipping around.
