WWF wants you to Pin It for the Planet

pin_it_header

[Note: this post is in partnership with GreenLiving and the World Wildlife Fund]

“From May 31-June 6, WWF-Canada is running Pin It for the Planet, a campaign encouraging Canadians to shake up their car routine and use active, sustainable ways to go about daily travels to work, shop, school and play.   WWF’s goal is to get as many people as possible out of their car, and then, as a sign of their commitment to the environment, are encouraged to wear their car key pinned to their lapel to signify their action and spark conversation with others.”

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Walk it (Or bike it, bus it, board it… whatever)
  2. Track it (By telling us what you did every day)
  3. Pin it (Your car key. On your shirt. Do it.)

“It’s time we challenged our unhealthy relationship with our cars. In Canada, transportation accounts for almost 30 per cent of our total greenhouse gas emissions – the main cause of climate change. Finding sustainable alternatives to driving, even if only a few times a week, can have a tremendous positive impact on the environment and people’s health.

More than three-quarters (78 per cent) of Canadians know their driving has a negative environmental impact, but they are not likely to give up their vehicles even when they could easily use other forms of transportation (75 per cent).  In fact, Canadians are more willing to give up their cell phones, TVs, Internet access, coffee, junk food, credit cards and for some, even sex, before they set aside their car keys.”

The WWF is also running a cool Free Bike-In Movie Night here in Toronto on Saturday, June 5th at 7 pm:

WWF-Canada invites you to a free outdoor screening of the beloved Steven Spielberg classic E.T. Upon the grass, and underneath the starry sky, the whole family will enjoy this summer night.

It’s like a drive-in movie, but without your car.  Because let’s face it – your car doesn’t need you. But your planet sure does.

Location: Metro Square Parkette (55 John Street, adjacent to Roy Thompson Hall, near St. Andrew subway station)

OH YEAH! The Viaduct bikelanes get MORE green paint!

Well, I don’t know what’s going on.  This is a level of paying attention to cycling infrastructure on the Bloor Viaduct that, quite frankly, I thought I’d never see (and it pissed me off, often). But now, after the green paint that was laid down late last week in the bikelane, there is now MORE […]

FACEPALM: City closes Hoskin bikelane for PanAm Games

What’s a great idea?  Closing down one of the busiest bikelanes in the city and not providing a detour that’s safe for cyclists (and pedestrians) because of the “short distance of the inconvenience”. A sign erected on June 25 indicates the closure of the Hoskin bike lane for two months during the Pan Am Games. […]

OH YEAH: Easy Bikes – A New Name for Upright Bikes?

Interesting article from Momentum Mag from earlier this month: Did the Wall Street Journal just rename the most accessible, useful, and comfortable of all bicycle styles? Upright bicycles, sometimes referred to by Momentum Mag as city bikes, are hands down the best style of bicycle for daily use. A relaxed frame geometry and swept-back handlebars combine to […]
