Toronto City Council passes Bixi Toronto Public Bike Program

BikingToronto is happy to tell you that Toronto City Council has passed the BIXI Toronto program motion: 33 for and 8 against.

The program is now scheduled to start in 2011 with 1,000 bikes, and will be run by the same people who run BIXI in Montreal.

I listened to the proceedings online (I would’ve watched, but was busy with other work) and tweeted about what was happening @bikingtoronto, and here are the tweets for you… most recent first:

  1. Toronto City Council passes BIXI Toronto program motion: 33 for and 8 against. #bikeTO #TOcouncil about 2 hours ago via Power Twitter

  3. Councillors worried about BIXI money forgetting 1 HUGE fact – doesn’t cost us a penny. Trying to skew facts is bad form. #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 2 hours ago via Power Twitter

  5. Mayor Miller on BIXI Toronto motion – “this is great, let’s make it unanimous!” #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 2 hours ago via Power Twitter

  6. Councillor Carrol is yelling at Councillor Feldman about BIXI. It’s fun when Council gets interesting. #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 2 hours ago via Power Twitter

  8. Councillor Heaps reminds Feldman that transportation staff has been talking to TPA for a long time #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

  9. Councillor Heaps reminds everyone that milestones have to be met to make sure BIXI is successful. #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

  12. Councillor Perks: Bixi Toronto costs us nothing, we share in profit, not liable for losses, and own it all at the end. #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

  13. Councillor Perks reinforces the point that BIXI Toronto profits shared by city, financial losses not borne by city. #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

  14. Councillor De Baermaker asking questions that reinforce the positives of BIXI Toronto. Great job Glenn! #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

  15. Councillor De Baermaker makes a great point – City makes loan guarantees to a lot of organizations – never had a default #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

  21. Councillor Holyday is worried about a few parking spots going missing to hold 1,000 bikes #TOcouncil #bikeTO about 3 hours ago via Power Twitter

Oh yeah!  BlogTO has picked up the BikingToronto post last week about this.  Steamwhistle deserves lots of toasts. As Biking Toronto reports, over the last year or so the beer company has installed similar stations at the Brick Works, the Duke of York pub, and most recently in front of Bike Sauce. They’ve also been […]

NEWS: Why not make biking on sidewalks legal in the suburbs?

I tend to agree with the main concept here… that suburban arterials need bike infrastructure badly… but cars go SO fast on those roads, it’s impossible to feel safe even in a bikelane that is just paint. A physical barrier (curb, bollards, etc) is needed, or an cycling addition on the side of sidewalks.  Many […]

OH YEAH! How I learned to love cycling my way to work

I’ll be honest, and I hate to admit this, but I used to be that person that perpetually ran five minutes late—to everything. I’d do my best to be timely, but in many circumstances, I just couldn’t seem to make it to my commitments on time. A few years ago my brother became a bicycle […]
