Toronto Public Bike Sharing Update

publicbikesystemThe City of Toronto just sent out a special update to Cyclometer subscribers on the Public Bike System, which has been in trouble due to finances.  A new arrangement has apparently been hammered out, and will be discussed at the April 20th meeting of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee:

Proposed Public Bicycle Program – Staff Report

Background File: http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2010/pw/bgrd/backgroundfile-28853.pdf (PDF)

bixilogoCity staff and the Public Bike System Company (PBSC) have negotiated the draft terms of an agreement whereby PBSC would enter into a 10-year agreement with the City to be launched May 1, 2011.  When the program is deployed, Torontonians and visitors would have access to 1,000 bicycles via 80 fully automated and conveniently located “bicycle parking stations” in the downtown area during the first year of operation with the potential to expand the system to other areas in the future. The System shall be operated under the brand “BIXI Toronto”.

During this first phase PBSC and City staff would focus on achieving five project milestones that would trigger the launch of the program.

The five project milestones are:

•    $600,000 in sponsorship funding;
•    1,000 subscription pledges;
•    80 approved bicycle parking station locations;
•    Marketing/communications plan in place; and
•    PBSC obtaining a loan commitment on terms satisfactory to the Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer.

The project milestones must be achieved by November 30, 2010 to launch the program  by May 1, 2011. When the project milestones have been met, the City will provide a loan guarantee ($4.8 million) to PBSC. In turn, PBSC will secure a loan for an estimated $4.8 million and commence to manufacture the BIXI equipment for installation in Toronto and establish a local operations group to manage the program.

What do you think of this new arrangement?

OH YEAH: The Origin Story of Sunnyside Bike Park – An Advocacy Success Story

In early 2011, the High Park BMX jumps were removed as they were on the Seneca Wolf Clan’s Serpent Mounds in the south east corner of the park. A few members of the Toronto Off-Road Bicycle Association (TORBA) approached the new Ward 13 Councillor, Sarah Doucette to ask what the City was going to do […]

NEWS: Should cyclists be allowed to ride through stop signs?

Obviously, yes.  Just like drivers are.  Spend any time at a stop sign and watch how many cars do “rolling stops” if there ar no other moving vehicles near the intersection.  Spoiler alert: almost every driver does rolling stops, just like cyclists do. In fact, when I learned to drive in Newmarket, a stop sign […]

SHOP: Brand new bike shop a shrine for serious cyclists

Well, the headline is a little stupid… it should read “…shrine for roadie cyclists”, as “serious” doesn’t only apply to those willing to drop thousands of dollars on a bike. It applies equally to the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of Torontonians who are serious about using their bike to get around the city – to […]

OH YEAH: Rolling Youth into Toronto’s Bicycle Renaissance

With countless community events being hosted from May 25th to June 25th, the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is anticipating Bike Month 2015. Municipalities and community groups alike are hosting the A to Z in bike events, from food incentivized group rides to bike repair crash courses. Although cycling mode shares are still relatively low […]

OH YEAH! Steamwhistle expands its network of bike repair stations

Oh yeah!  BlogTO has picked up the BikingToronto post last week about this.  Steamwhistle deserves lots of toasts. As Biking Toronto reports, over the last year or so the beer company has installed similar stations at the Brick Works, the Duke of York pub, and most recently in front of Bike Sauce. They’ve also been […]

NEWS: Why not make biking on sidewalks legal in the suburbs?

I tend to agree with the main concept here… that suburban arterials need bike infrastructure badly… but cars go SO fast on those roads, it’s impossible to feel safe even in a bikelane that is just paint. A physical barrier (curb, bollards, etc) is needed, or an cycling addition on the side of sidewalks.  Many […]

OH YEAH! How I learned to love cycling my way to work

I’ll be honest, and I hate to admit this, but I used to be that person that perpetually ran five minutes late—to everything. I’d do my best to be timely, but in many circumstances, I just couldn’t seem to make it to my commitments on time. A few years ago my brother became a bicycle […]
