BikingToronto is 4 Years Old!

That’s right!  4 years have gone by since I made the very first post on BikingToronto on Jan. 12, 2006.  4 years!  If BikingToronto was a kid, it would be starting kindergarten. :)

What’s happened in 4 years?  Why don’t I tell you?

Hosting:

BikingToronto started out on blogger.com before moving to it’s own domain, and just moved over to WordPress at the start of this year.

Evolution:

BikingToronto started out as a personal blog orginally (I’m moving personal posts over to my new “Joe Bikes” blog ), but quickly started become more informative than narrative, as I was having trouble finding cycling related information online without running all over the internet.  It was time to change that, so BikingToronto started out on becoming the site you see today.

Information:

I love information.  Not just reading it and learning it… but organizing it and making it accessible.  That’s why BikingToronto is here… because cycling information about Toronto was kind of hard to track down… the City of Toronto website was (and still is) a good starting point, but finding out about news and events meant subscribing to umpteen newsletters and constantly checking lots of different websites.  That’s very inefficient.

Maps:

BikingToronto was the first website to use the power of Google Maps to make a map of Bikelanes in Toronto.  This idea has since been duplicated by other websites.  You’re welcome!

BikingToronto was also the first (and only, still, I believe) to make an online map of all the Bikeshops in Toronto.  Super-handy to know where the closest place is.

These maps plus links to others are on our Maps page.

Innovation:

Hey, how about a website that makes it easy for cyclists to interact and connect?  That’s what the recent renovation of BikingToronto was all about.  Want to discuss any topic under the sun?  Want to create groups?  Want to create and share events?  You can do it on BikingToronto.  View the Site Guide for more info.

Birthday Posts:

Want a glimpse into the past?  Here are the site birthday posts from years past.

Now then… who wants cake? :)

NEWS: Why not make biking on sidewalks legal in the suburbs?

I tend to agree with the main concept here… that suburban arterials need bike infrastructure badly… but cars go SO fast on those roads, it’s impossible to feel safe even in a bikelane that is just paint. A physical barrier (curb, bollards, etc) is needed, or an cycling addition on the side of sidewalks.  Many […]

OH YEAH! How I learned to love cycling my way to work

I’ll be honest, and I hate to admit this, but I used to be that person that perpetually ran five minutes late—to everything. I’d do my best to be timely, but in many circumstances, I just couldn’t seem to make it to my commitments on time. A few years ago my brother became a bicycle […]
