Dutch CargoBikes Coming To Toronto!

(Cross-posted to I Bike T.O.)

Great post over on BikeToronto.ca right now:

Basically, a Dutch-Canadian couple living in the Netherlands is migrating to Canada (specifically Toronto) with the aim of becoming a Canadian distributor of Fietsfabriek Cargo Bikes (also known as “Bakfiets” [pronounced “back-feet”], which loosely translates into “cargo bike”). Cargo Bikes are insanely popular in the Netherlands – apparently almost every family has at least one:

This is an initiative of Anandamayii Czerwinski of the Netherlands and her Canadian partner Michael Lorincz who have been users of these cargo bikes in the Netherlands and now see an opportunity to bring them to Canada… They are moving with their two children and will start the business here from scratch. Once they are here they will start looking for investors or retailers that they can work with. Their plan has the support of the manufacturer of the bikes “Fietsfabriek” www.fietsfabriek.nl.

To get more information on this initiative you can contact Anandamayii at anandamayii(a)tiscali.nl (replace (a) with @ in you e-mail program) and/or look at the website www.fietsfabriek.nl to see the various models that the manufacturer produces. (A new website www.dutchbikefactory.com is under construction and will hopefully be ready by May.)

Anandamayii is pictured here riding the cargo-bike in Vondelpark, Amsterdam. In it is her daughter Alisha, her son Mishka and his friend Noah. This is the bike she will be riding around Toronto in the month of May. If you see her on the bike she said you are welcome to ask to test drive it.

Way more great information about this is on the BikeToronto post.

This news is fitting right after the recent approval here in Toronto of a Bloor bike lane pilot. Vancouver, a city that has been (and continues to) investing in safe cycling infrastructure, is undergoing a transformation – giving people the option to bike to work/school/play safely, and it’s paying off in getting cars off the […]

NEWS: A Complete List of Bloor Bike Lane Articles

After 4 decades (!) of Toronto considering the possibility of bike lanes on Bloor, Toronto City Council overwhelmingly voted (38-3) in favour of a 1 year pilot to collect data and evaluate a 2 km stretch of Bloor with bikelanes. I think a lot of people were surprised at just how lopsided the vote was… […]
