Painting Jarvis Street

It’s here! It’s finally here! The paint has finally been put down on Jarvis Street!

The press release came out July 14, saying that the work on Jarvis was about to begin. The lights down the reversible middle lane were removed and solid yellow lines were painted to indicate to drivers that they should no longer use this infamous lane.

Unfortunately, this caused confusion for riders and drivers alike, following the fine example set by these guys. Cyclists were even ticketed for riding down the centre lane (even though she was taking pictures to write this post, to clarify the situation for others).

Painting the actual lines began yesterday (July 24) and continued today. The bike symbols are planned for early this week. Check out some pictures of the painting process!

See even more pictures in our Facebook Album.

So if you have any spare time, grab your bike, head to Jarvis and give the new lanes a test ride!!!

WIPT hats @ Bike Sauce…

Wear It Proud Toronto cycling caps now available at Bike Sauce. The hat that says you indeed bike, plus with the revival of 80′s hexachrome colours slam dunk the mode with these hats.

Come on by the shop and peruse this highly fashionable headgear. As showcased by our Sauciers, they were mere cycling activists before, now they are”styling”

…cycling activists.

There’s quite a few improvements to the space afoot… So here is your chance to lend a hand, get a say in the changes, and basically make a big deal out of it and have another party!!!

Here is a few things that we need help with:

-Large Cargo Moving Workshop (aka helping us move couches, using your bike!!!)
-Choosing New Bistro Tables
-Stocking the Library (suggest books/magazines, hunt down donations, participate in book-buying frenzy)
-Helping Set-Up Internet (set-up networks and usage caps)
-Electrical Stuff (putting in new light fixtures and outlets)
-Planters (building them, donating plants, buying/transporting plants)
-Party (help organize a huge hoopla to ring in the new space!)

If you want to help with any of the above, please give a shout to Michelle (michelle.stamour@gmail.com) or Anibal (caffenated@gmail.com).

Send an email to the city anyway

URGENT Call for Action: Bike Lanes on John Street! Send the City an email before Thursday, July 1

Want more bike lanes in the downtown core? Wish the St George/Beverly Lane connected to a safe route for travels further south than Queen? Then send the city an email TODAY (or at least before Thursday)!!!

Here is some background info on the issue. For more information, see the full blog post on the Mez Dispenser.

“The longest uninterrupted north-south bike lane in central Toronto is ‘Route 35‘, which travels along Beverly, St George & Poplar Plains all the way from St Clair down to Queen Street.  At Queen it comes to a dead-end, feeding into a black hole of car-priority streets with no bike infrastructure anywhere nearby.  Ten years ago, City Council approved the Toronto Bike Plan, which includes north-south bike lanes on Spadina & Peter, and physically separated bike lanes on Richmond & Adelaide.  Ten years later, including seven years under Mayor Miller, we still have no bike lanes in that area. Now, to make things worse, the City is planning to re-design John Street and it looks like bike safety is not part of the equation”

*sorry michelle
